This summer flying season has been one for the record books! Traffic numbers are increasing and KLVJ is a bustling, active flying community! As our growth continues, I want to take this opportunity to discuss tie-down ramp parking and vehicle parking at KLVJ.

In order to maintain a safe and active ramp area, please refrain from parking your vehicles on the ramp at ALL TIMES. You can drive your vehicle to the ramp to load and unload your aircraft, but as soon as you are done, please move your vehicle to of our off-ramp parking areas adjacent to the FBO.

We have noticed there are several vehicles that drive to the ramp side of the FBO and park to use the restroom or grab a cup of coffee. Please do NOT park your cars on the ramp in front of the FBO stairs. Please use the parking lots along Airfield Lane.

I also need to mention tie-down aircraft parking. If you have an aircraft tied-down at KLVJ, you MUST sign a Tie-Down Agreement and pay the $75 monthly fee. We will be working diligently to ensure every aircraft has an agreement in place in the coming days. Please help us ensure a safe environment by securing your aircraft with tie-down ropes and parking brakes. We complete a tie-down aircraft inspection every morning at KLVJ and will be contacting aircraft owners to ensure agreements are in place and payments are made.

Compliance and safety are two major goals for the entire KLVJ and TAP team. Please contact my office if you have any questions, or suggestions on how we can improve. Thank you for your cooperation in reaching these goals!

FAA/TxDOT GRANT PROJECT UPDATE

The TxDOT improvement project has been completed. Over the next few days, the crews will be cleaning the work areas and putting the finishing touches around the field. Below is a list of items that have been completed:

Replaced both regulators in the electrical vault to ensure proper and efficient airfield lighting
Re-designated taxiways to comply with FAA regulations
Installed new taxiway signs to reflect changes
Re-painted all yellow and black ramp and taxilane centerlines
Re-striped Runway 14/32
Moved hold-short lines to comply with FAA regulations
Replaced Main Gate and Gate 3 and added additional security lighting
Replaced manual Gate 4 with an automatic gate to increase security
Removed overhead power lines and poles on Airfield Lane
Installed underground power connections to increase reliability and efficiency of service along Airfield Lane
Rebuilt the power pole and meter rack behind the FBO to ensure longevity and compliance
Installed a stop sign main gate alerting visitors of the active taxiway and aircraft right-of-way

Thank you to all the crew members for their countless hours of hard work. We sincerely appreciate each of our residents, pilots, students and businesses for their patience and cooperation throughout the improvement project.

The grant project was a great success and we are thrilled to deliver new features and an improved airport experience. We are thrilled to finish this project, and will soon begin planning the next round of improvements. Please feel free to send in your thoughts, recommendations and comments for future consideration. We are building the best possible general aviation facility, and with your help, we can achieve this goal!

BAY AREA AERO CLUB SKILLS DAY

The Bay Area Aero Club is hosting its annual Flying Skills Day on September 29, 2018 and they have great things planned. There will be delicious barbecue for lunch and it is voting day for the next board members. Come meet the candidates, other members, and show your skills. The main event will be the SPOT LANDING contest!

CONGRATULATIONS JIM KELLEY

Congratulations to Jim Kelley on receiving the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award is the most prestigious award the FAA issues to pilots. This award is meant to recognize individuals who have exhibited professionalism, skill, and aviation expertise for at least 50 years while piloting aircraft as "Master Pilots."

Thank you to Chris Kelly who sent in the photo and provided the following information about the event.

"In his career, Jim Kelley flew a C130 in Vietnam, helped certify the Boeing 777 for passenger use, developed crew procedures for the new 787, helped pioneer twin engine passenger flights over the oceans (ETOPS), and assisted in establishing regular passenger flights from the US over the North Pole to the Far East (a route that saves hours of flight time).

In his retirement he enjoys flying his SeaRey out of KLVJ, tennis and fishing. Special thanks to Lance Little of the FAA for coming out to present the award, Randy Wahlberg and the crew at Air Professionals for putting together the party, Jesus for the good eats, and a special recognition to Rocky Miller, who in his final days helped make this award happen."

I am very excited to say that we are officially moving into the last phase of our Airport Improvement Project! Starting on Monday, August 20, crews will be on site to complete the remaining items: removal and replacement of three access gates, and underground placement of the power lines that cross Airfield Lane/taxiways near the FBO. Both projects will greatly improve our safety and security at KLVJ.

Gates 1 and 3 are being replaced with new motorized gates and gate 2 will remain as is. We place a high value on securing the airport and our main gates are the key to ensuring a secure environment. The gate on CR 127 for T-Hangar access will be replaced with a motorized one as well. Our security is only as good as the weakest link and having an open manual gate 24/7 is NOT effective. A new motorized gate will be installed to strengthen our overall approach to security.

Safety signage will also be added to critical points around the airport. Stop signs will be placed at every gate, in addition to signs warning drivers about the "aircraft right of way" on all roads. Additionally, "Unauthorized Vehicles Not Allowed past this point" signs will be installed to ensure that no vehicles enter areas where they do not belong.

While crews are working on the gates, they will also complete the removal of the overhead power lines adjacent to the FBO. These lines will be redirected underground and improved to provide adequate and sustainable power to the various buildings along Airfield Lane. This has been one of the top items on my list for a very long time. Removing the dangerous and outdated overhead lines will make the entire area safer, and ease pilot concerns about taxiing down Airfield Lane. Safer ground ops, and the ability for helicopters to safely navigate the area, improves the quality of life for us all.

This project has been a huge step forward for Pearland Regional and I appreciate everyone's efforts to help see us across the finish line! Stay tuned for more information about this, and future projects!

What is an efficiency race? Pilots must plan a flight, determine their time enroute and fuel burn, then fly the course. The winner is the one who gets closest to their time and fuel burn.

I can say without a doubt that the last 45 days have been the busiest and most challenging time since I arrived in Pearland in the spring of 2015. I say that with a smile on my face because we welcome all challenges and thrive in a fast-paced, busy environment! The FAA/TxDOT improvement project has been a huge leap forward for KLVJ and as we near the completion of the project, I want to reflect on the changes we made, and what effect they will have on our home base.

We started with removal and repainting of all ramp and taxiway area centerlines. The new black and yellow guidelines will help taxiing aircraft safely maneuver around the airport. We also did some major upgrades to our electric vault, replacing the regulators that control the airfield lighting. We increased energy efficiency and performance to all the taxiway and runway lights, as well as all signs.

As we were in the planning stages of this project, we realized that the taxiway designations were not compliant with FAA Regulations, so we began the process of redesignating the old taxiways B, C, and D. We installed all new signs along the entire runway and each taxiway. The new designations are in effect and can be seen clearly in all directions. This will help all pilots safely navigate KLVJ's movement areas. Each of these improvements were designed to increase our compliance and safety standards at KLVJ!

We removed and repainted all the Runway 14/32 markings and we had to moved the hold short markings further from the runway to comply with FAA regulations. This was the most challenging period during our renovations. Coordinating the closure of the runway, monitoring construction crews, and dealing with the weather was a daunting task. I want to thank everyone for their support and assistance during this period. We achieved our goal of revitalizing our runway to improve safety for all pilots, students, and instructors.

We have a few items that are still in the works as of this newsletter release. We will be replacing all three main entrance gates to the airport and removing the overhead power lines that cross Airfield Lane by the FBO and moving them underground. These are two major safety improvements that we have needed for some time. We will be working on these final items in the coming weeks and we are all excited to have everything completed soon.

I am sure you have noticed the crews working around the clock to complete our airport improvement project. I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the project, and especially our customers and tenants who have been patient and understanding of the challenges this project presents.

We completed paint removal and re-striping across all ramp and taxiway areas, ahead of schedule. Crews are currently making upgrades to our electrical vault and will be replacing the access gates at each entrance.

The runway is currently CLOSED for paint removal and re-striping with an anticipated reopen date of June 20. We are keeping a close eye on the weather and will make every effort to alert users of an extended runway closure, if necessary, as soon as possible. I understand this is an inconvenience for every pilot and business on the field, and all the KLVJ staff thank you again for your cooperation. We're confident in the end you'll be pleased with the results.

During a recent progress update meeting, we were notified that the old taxiway designations did not comply with FAA regulations. The scope of this project triggers the requirement of compliance, therefore some taxiways will be renamed.

The warm weather and busy flying season are in full effect and as always, we encourage everyone to make safety the top priority each and every day. I'd like to remind everyone that effective communication is a key factor in maintaining a safe operating environment.

We have seen our traffic numbers increase year after year. Our rapid, sustained growth can bring challenges to the traffic pattern. Whether you are in a helicopter, fixed-wing or trying to cross a runway, effective and timely communication is the first line of defense against any incident.

I have experienced what can happen when two pilots aren't communicating during flight. I've seen a fixed wing aircraft pass a few feet over a helicopter already on the runway preparing for takeoff. I have seen vehicles and aircraft cross the runways with pilots on short final approach. I have witnessed countless go-arounds because one of the pilots in the pattern isn't using their radio. These examples are real and could be totally avoided by simple and direct communication between pilots.

We do not have a control tower here at KLVJ and that makes each individual pilot responsible for their actions and communication with others. No one prefers a last second go-around because taxiing traffic pulls out on to the runway, or because someone is using the wrong end of 14/32. Listen to your radio and clearly state your position and intentions while in KLVJ Airspace. If you are unsure about something...ASK. We are here to help each other. The system only works if we all hold each other accountable and work as a team to ensure safe, effective communication.

AIRPORT MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Construction associated with the FAA grant for security and safety improvements started Monday, May 21.

Throughout the course of the project, we will send frequent updates about construction locations and associated closures and will include detailed maps (click the links below to view the maps).

We will work closely with the engineer, contractor, and inspector to minimize disruptions as best we can.

Below you'll find an overview of the project. The dates listed are subject to change based on weather.

Phase 1: Remove pavement markings east of Runway 14/32

Monday, May 21 - Friday, May 25

Phase 2: Remove pavement markings west of Runway 14/32

Saturday, May 26 - Monday, June 4

Phase 3: Remove pavement markings on Taxiway Alpha

Tuesday, June 5 - Saturday, June 9

Phase 4: Remove pavement markings and re-stripe Runway 14/32 (includes vault work and electrical work in along Runway 14/32)

Sunday, June 10 - Tuesday, June 19

Phase 5: Re-stripe pavement markings on all non-runway surfaces

Wednesday, June 20 - Saturday, June 24

Throughout the entire project, crews will be working on electrical and will be replacing gates and signs outside of the Runway Safety Area (RSA).

We anticipate the entire project will wrap up by Wednesday, July 4.

I'd like to start off by saying Thank You to each and every person that helped KLVJ achieve our busiest March on record. It shows just how dedicated you are to General Aviation, and it is a great indicator for the rest of our year. It sure is a tremendous feeling to see so many faces, old and new, around the airport every single day!

With the busy flying season upon us, I want to spend a moment reviewing airport safety, and addressing one issue in particular that I get asked about often: airport parking.

As our based aircraft count rises, and the number of flying students, instructors, and visitors grow, we need to all do our part to maintain a safe and efficient environment. Aircraft and vehicle parking are a big area of concern for the airport.

Below are a few bullet points that will help the taxiway and ramp areas stay open and clear of obstructions.

Airfield Lane is both a taxiway and roadway - not a parking lot. Do not park on, or in the grass areas near Airfield Lane at any time.
Vehicles can be parked at the FBO office, FBO Hangar overflow parking, or the grass field on the south side of the FBO (long term parking).
Taxiing aircraft ALWAYS have the right-of-way. Ensure your aircraft or vehicle remains clear of movement areas when parked.
Aircraft that are being towed, repositioned, or moved in/out of a hangar are not to be parked on the taxiways for an extended period. We ask that you do your best to quickly move aircraft and clear the taxiways as soon as possible. Placing a traffic cone by the wing is a great short-term safety net - but it does not effectively make that a parking spot. There are more than enough tie-down spots on our ramp to accommodate any overflow aircraft.
When parking any aircraft, personal vehicle, or equipment at the airport, please remember, there is no parking within 25 feet of the taxiway centerline to maintain clearance for taxiing aircraft.

If you are unsure of where to park your vehicle or aircraft at KLVJ, swing by the FBO and we will be happy to assist you. This is one small way we can all contribute to the safety and efficiency of our home base.

One of the things that truly separates KLVJ from most other airports I have encountered are the people, and the way we all strive to work together. We have a community like no other! Day or night, rain or shine, we can depend on each other to help maintain safe flying, remedy problems, and promote a tremendously positive aviation atmosphere!

I want to share with everyone an upcoming opportunity provided by our friends at Coastal Skies Flying Club and Total Aircraft Services. On April 7 they will be hosting an FAA basic medical clinic from 12pm-6pm at the Total Aircraft Services Hangar. More details are shared in the article below.

I encourage everyone to take advantage of this great chance to complete your medical requirements and spend a day visiting with other pilots and instructors at KLVJ. These types of events are key in maintaining a safe and effective environment!

There are countless chances to learn new skills, reach another milestone, or help someone else discover and unlock their potential in aviation. I'd like to thank each member of our community for always going above and beyond to look out for each other and provide opportunities for success!

FAA BASIC MEDICAL CLINIC AT KLVJ

Coastal Skies Flying Club and Total Aircraft Services is hosting a FAA basic medical clinic on April 7 from 12pm-6pm at the Total Aircraft Services Hangar, 17910 Airfield Lane. You can save time and schedule an appointment by calling (281) 338-2006.

Dr. Ping Chu is a pilot friendly physician with 25 years in the medical field. He will conduct Basic Medical Exams at KLVJ to help pilots stay current with regulations. The cost is $100 (cash or check) and the Basic Medical is good for 4 years (check with AOPA about your medical requirements). You must have held an FAA Medical Certificate within the last 10 years to use the new Basic Medical.

Fuel Safety and Annual Inspections

Fuel safety is our primary concern each and every day at KLVJ. We take extensive measures to ensure each gallon of fuel at KLVJ is received, stored, and dispensed properly. Our staff of NATA Certified Professional Line Service Technicians are well trained and equipped to handle this immense responsibility. I'd like to share with you a few of the ways we safeguard against any potential dangers.

Before the FBO opens at 8am each day, our staff is on the ground inspecting fuel samples and conducting quality checks. We inspect each tank and truck top to bottom, then collect and record fuel samples from every fueling port, tank drain, and filter sump. We have routine daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual checks that help us stay in control of the highest quality fuel standards.

February is our annual inspection month and I am proud to say that once again we have successfully completed our inspections on all storage tanks and trucks for 2018. Each meter has been recalibrated for precision, and all filtering elements have been changed. Our fuel farm is in great working condition and ready to continue fueling the tremendous growth at KLVJ.

I want to thank our staff for their dedication and hard work. They dutifully put in the hours, day after day, to maintain our standards and provide excellent service. We will always strive to uphold the highest industry quality standards, and if you would like to know more, feel free to give me a call and I can answer any questions you may have.

AIRPORT MAINTENANCE UPDATE

In May, the airport received a grant from the FAA for security and safety improvements. A few of the safety items that will be included in the project are: new markings for the runway, upgrades to the electrical vault for the airport lights, new illuminated runway signs, and security gate enhancements.

Projects included in the improvements include:

All new runway markings
All new taxiway striping
New centerline for taxiway/Airfield Lane
Relocating and replacing illuminated signs to comply with FAA distance standards
New regulators
Runway safety markings including flashing lights
Replacement of main entrance gate

The project went out for bid in early December and a contractor has been selected. We anticipate the work will begin in Spring 2018

FROM THE MANAGER

As the sun set on 2017, and I looked back over everything we have done in the last year, I am filled with gratitude and appreciation for every person who puts their heart and soul into our airport. Every business owner, technician, pilot, instructor, student... YOU are the reason KLVJ is growing into a General Aviation destination and professional aviation facility. And for many of us who spend more time inside the fence than out, KLVJ is our home, and I am proud of everything we have accomplished.

2018 will be my 4th year at KLVJ as the Airport Operations Manager, and the last 3 years have been a whirlwind of activity, tremendous growth, relentless hard-work, laughs, loss, new friendships and a community like no other I have experienced. I couldn't ask for a better place to be, or better people to work with. Our annual fuel sales continue to surpass previous years, for both fuel types. That is something worth celebrating, and it needs to be mentioned how grateful we are to have such a loyal community backing us up!

2018 will also bring new challenges and opportunities for KLVJ and we welcome them with open arms. AIRPORT MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Projects included in the improvements include:

All new runway markings
All new taxiway striping
New centerline for taxiway/Airfield Lane
Relocating and replacing illuminated signs to comply with FAA distance standards

The project went out for bid in early December and a contractor has been selected. We anticipate the work will begin in Spring 2018

Runway Incursions on the Rise

Putting an end to Runway Incursions is a priority for the KLVJ Team. The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) defines a runway incursion as "any occurrence at an aerodrome involving the incorrect presence of an aircraft, vehicle, or person on the protected area of a surface designated for the landing and take-off of aircraft."

In plain speak, an incursion occurs every time a car crosses the runway without communicating via radio and without proper vehicle lights. I cannot overemphasize how dangerous and reckless this is to the vehicle passengers and to the aircraft operating at the airport.

These incursions cannot continue. Because of the repeated violations, we have begun monitoring and recording all runway incursions, and will report them to the FAA. We must all be held accountable for the safety of others while at KLVJ.

I ask everyone to be vigilant and assist our staff in protecting the pilots using the airport. If you see someone crossing, or attempting to cross the runway, say something. Together we can ensure that every aircraft has a safe place to take-off and land.

If you are towing an aircraft, or have a direct need to cross the runway without any alternative, we require two simple things: radio contact with aircraft and a visible beacon light of some kind on your vehicle.

We are more than happy to escort anyone across the runway using our approved vehicles.

Pearland Regional Airport has seen some major changes in these last few years and we are extremely proud of our efforts and the support given by our amazing community. As we continue to grow and adapt, we are focused on providing meaningful, lasting changes that enhance all business and personal aspects of our day-to-day operations.

I want to remind everyone reading this newsletter, that I want to hear your thoughts, suggestions, and comments! Feedback from our community is a driving force for change and the open door policy at KLVJ is in full effect. You can find me at the FBO during the week, and I encourage you to stop by and share your thoughts with me. I often hear the same questions from many folks, and I want to provide an update on one of the most requested items in recent weeks - Online Payment Options.

I understand that writing, mailing or dropping off a check every month can be a hassle. Busy schedules could benefit from an online payment method in place. I have heard your requests and I am happy to report that Texas Aviation Partners is working diligently to address this issue. We are thoroughly researching and testing online payment options at this time. We previously used Appfolio for payments, but that system was not a viable long-term option. We made the decision to drop that service and search for a new, permanent solution. I hope to report back soon on our findings!

If you have a great idea or a legitimate concern, please take the time to send me and email or come by the FBO and share with us! I may not have a quick answer or solution for every issue, but it is my duty and responsibility to listen to your needs and make necessary changes. 2018 is forecasted to be the best year yet at KLVJ, and you can all do your part to make sure we exceed expectations. This is our home and I want you to know your voices are heard! Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to meeting more of you in the coming months as we discuss ways we can continue to make Pearland Regional into the best GA airport around!

Hurricane Harvey made landfall to our south on Friday, August 25th, and proceeded to devastate the entire Texas Coast. In the following days, Harvey dropped an estimated 33 trillion gallons of water along it's record-breaking path. In Houston, we saw catastrophic flooding like never before, but this unprecedented event gave the entire area the chance to come together and show the world what TEXAS is made of - compassion, teamwork, and understanding.

Pearland Regional Airport's runway never flooded allowing us to stay open and support recovery efforts. Our Line Technicians spent several days (and nights) in the FBO providing fuel and services to emergency responder and supply missions. Stephen and Trevor went above and beyond the normal call of duty so that we could do our part to support the rescue and recovery efforts...even as Trevor's apartment completely flooded! The effort our team gave shows exactly how dedicated and committed they are. I would like to thank them again for everything they have done and continue to do!

We are open for business as usual, and we are ready for the unusual tasks that lay ahead as Houston continues to clean-up and rebuild. We understand that some areas were hit harder than others. I want to reach out to our community and let folks know that we stand together and if there is a way we might be able to assist you, please give the FBO a call! We will do our best to help the recovery process move quickly. Help your neighbor - because we are Texans - and that is what we do. It is just one of the many reasons we are all proud to call KLVJ home!

We would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support during the hurricane. Your help and patience while we worked tirelessly to get things back to normal was greatly appreciated. We were fortunate to have only had minor flooding in a small area. Our team worked hard to get LVJ back to full operations as quickly as possible to help support Pearland and surrounding communities.

After the weather subsided, we supported over 50 aircraft for emergency evacuation and supply drop missions.

As we all enjoy the busy summer flying months, I would like to remind everyone about our Fueling Procedures and Regulations.

Our goal is to adhere to the highest standards for storing and delivering fuel. In addition to our daily fuel checks, which include draining filters, checking for contaminants, samplingand fuel testing, we also have some very straightforward guidelines for delivering safe fuel EVERY TIME! These rues not only apply to full-service fueling, but also self-service.

Please take a moment to review just a few of our regulations to help us maintain the highest standards:

The following is prohibited while an aircraft is being fueled or defueled:

Smoking
Operation of a radio transmitter or electrical system

Aircraft fueling and defueling is prohibited in the following scenarios:

- While aircraft is parked in a hangar
When raining
During an electrical storm

As a final reminder, hot refueling (fueling of aircraft while the engines are running), shall be permitted only under special circumstances and then only when authorized by Airport Management.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to stop by the FBO and ask. As always, full-service fueling is available during normal business hours, and tenants receive a discount!

Hurricane season is upon us and it typically lasts from June to November each year. We are all aware of the power, danger, and costs associated with these storms. I want to spend some time offering you a tips to prepare our airport, your home, and your family for a major storm.

In the days leading up to landfall, a great deal of preparation can be made to minimize the impact of the storms. For instance, moving your aircraft inside an adequate hangar and boarding up any windows are great ways to start. Something that often goes overlooked are the large amounts of equipment, cars, tractors, and debris that may be left outdoors. It's recommended that you take the time now to clean up your areas, before your "lawn ornaments" become projectiles that can cause tremendous damage. Securing ALL of your property is the best way to prevent losses and excessive repair costs.

When a hurricane arrives, the time for preparation is long gone. You need to prepare now, so you are ready at a moment's notice. Here are a few recommended steps from Ready.gov you can take to prepare:

Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the local hurricane evacuation route(s) to take and have a plan for where you can stay. Contact your local emergency management agency for more information.
Put together a disaster supply kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, first aid supplies, and copies of your critical information if you need to evacuate
If you are not in an area that is advised to evacuate and you decide to stay in your home, plan for adequate supplies in case you lose power and water for several days and you are not able to leave due to flooding or blocked roads.
Make a family emergency communication plan.
Many communities have text or email alerting systems for emergency notifications.To find out what alerts are available in your area, search the Internet with your town, city, or county name and the word "alerts."

The long, hot days of summer have arrived and will certainly bring dangerously high temperatures. If you are working on your aircraft in the sun, or spending hours inside a hot hangar, make sure you take extra precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. We want to remind everyone how important it is to stay hydrated and prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke. You should be able to recognize the symptoms and determine what steps to take QUICKLY if you find anyone struggling with the heat!

Excessive heat can lead to sunburn, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion - the most common heat-related condition. Signs of heat exhaustion include cool, moist, pale or flushed skin, heavy sweating, headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, and/or exhaustion.

Heat stroke, while less common, is life threatening.Symptoms include hot, red skin which may be dry or moist, changes in consciousness, and/or vomiting. If you or someone around you is exhibiting any of these symptoms, please move the person to a cooler location and call 9-1-1 immediately.

The best way to avoid both heat exhaustion and heat stroke is to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water. You're always welcome to take a break in the FBO, enjoy the AC, and grab a bottle of water.

QUICK TIPS TO BEAT THE HEAT

Never leave children or pets in your vehicle. The inside temperature can quickly reach 120 degrees.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun's rays. Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
Use a buddy system when working in sweltering hangars. Take frequent breaks if working out on the ramp in the direct sunlight.
Work early in the day, or late in the evening to avoid the hottest temperatures.
If you need help, or see anyone that does - EVERY SECOND COUNTS! Act quickly and get the help you need.

TXDOT APPROVES GRAND FOR PEARLAND AIRPORT

The Pearland Regional Airport will be getting some much-needed upgrades now that a $500,000 grant from the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) has been approved. Even though the grant is federal, TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) actually approves who gets it and how it is spent. The money will go towards safety and security improvements at Pearland Regional Airport, including new entrance gates, signage, striping, electrical and lighting. The main focus will be helping reduce the chance of vehicles from entering the runways and taxiways, as well as enhancing the visibility of markings for pilots flying to and from Pearland Regional.

"The enhancements the airport is going to receive will help to make sure aircrafts can navigate the airport and move safely alongside their four-wheeled counterparts," said Stephen Alexander - Texas Aviation Partners.

"Over the past eighteen months, Pearland Regional Airport has seen explosive growth, including nearly forty new hangars, new commercial businesses arriving, and a substantial increase in full time employment."

According to TXDOT, arrivals and departures from community airports account for more than three million flight hours per year and provide aircraft facilities for agricultural, medical, business and commuter use.

The work in and around Pearland Regional Airport will start this summer and take two to three months to complete.

"Pearland is truly a small city now, and this grant will go a long way to ensuring that the airport is set to safely and efficiently continue its robust development," added Alexander. "We are excited for what the future holds for Pearland Regional Airport as it continues to become a stronger and stronger contributor to the greater Pearland community."

Springtime is here and that means a return to the skies for many local pilots! As the weather heats up, and the amount of flying increases daily, we would like to remind everyone about the dangers of FOD (foreign object debris), and what we can do to help keep the runway in excellent condition.

Airport staff perform FOD checks on the runway and taxiways every day. Our goal is to detect and remove any substance, debris, or article which could potentially cause damage. You would be surprised to see what we collect each day. I have seen tow-bars, wildlife, countless screws/bolts/rivets, iPads, trash, and even clothing out on the flight line! We will be collecting all the new FOD we find and showcasing it in the FBO, so you can see how real the threat is.

I want to take a moment and remind everyone that the first and best line of defense against FOD is YOU! A thorough pre-flight inspection, along with regular maintenance, is the best way to catch any loose ends before they (literally!) fall off. Securing your iPad, GPS, or other personal items inside the aircraft is another key way to prevent FOD. I have seen items left on the wing during pre-flight more than a few times, and when they hit the pavement, they end up not only breaking the item, but also creating an unsafe operating area for other pilots.

If you see something on the concrete, please do us all a favor - pick it up and dispose of it properly! That trash blowing across the ramp could end up in someone's engine! If you're unable to safely pick up FOD, please call the FBO so we can handle it immediately. When we work together to make the airport safer, we all win.

On Monday, January 16th, after months of anticipation, we were finally able to distribute keys to our T-hangar tenants. We were so excited for the tenants who had been eager to move in for weeks and grateful for their patience.

Passing out the welcome bags and watching folks move in their gear and aircraft was a sight to behold. These 23 new hangars are just the beginning of exciting things to come at KLVJ. We are thankful and excited for each of you that helped make this project possible.

GET TO KNOW TREVOR ESPERSEN

Trevor Espersen joined the KLVJ team in September of 2016. Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, Trevor brings a wealth of knowledge to our team. He was a supervisor at the busiest FBO in North America at Winnipeg International Airport (CYWG). There, he managed a team of 8, pumping nearly 1 million gallons of jet fuel a month.

Trevor enjoys the community atmosphere of KLVJ and being an integral part of the team. He does it all - from fuel sales to airfield repairs, every day is different. His favorite part of the job is doing FOD checks because he never knows what he will stumble upon. His favorite finds thus far have been deer skulls, bats, nets, balloons, even a bag of ducks. Stop by for a cup of coffee and Trevor will share with you some of his strangest findings.

In his spare time, Trevor likes to relax and play computer games. However, when boredom creeps in, Trevor likes to challenge himself by learning something new such as programming languages, building foam props from scratch, or even auto mechanics. He is currently in search of a violin teacher. Since relocating to Houston, Trevor has been to NASA twice, fueling his love of space. The next time you're at KLVJ say hi to Trevor- chances are you'll learn something new!

TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY VISIT

On December 2, 2016 Pearland Regional Airport hosted 13 Aviation Management students from Texas Southern University. The purpose of the visit was to learn about General Aviation Management which included flight line services, airport development, customer service, operations management, and fueling.

It was an honor to host the next generation of aviation managers. We hope to see some students in 2017 for possible internships, where they can further their education and get hands-on training.

T-HANGAR UPDATE

We are excited to announce that tenants of reserved T-hangars will be moving in Monday, January 16! A full crew is currently on site wrapping up the unit-by-unit final inspections and repair list to ensure each unit is perfect for move-in day.

COURTESY CAR

We're excited to announce we'll be adding a courtesy car to our fleet this month. It will be available to pilots flying into KLVJ for everything from a quick trip to La Casita or a business meeting in downtown Houston.

We are always looking for ways to better serve our customers and a courstesy car is part of the plan.

GET TO KNOW STEPHEN PATCHEN

What were you doing before joining the KLVJ Team? I was an Airborne Cavalry Scout in the US Army for 3.5 years. I enjoyed every minute of it, but family comes first. So in May 2013, when my contract was up, I came home and began attending school here in Houston.

When did you start working for KLVJ? I heard about Pearland Regional Airport's re-opening through friends, met with some members of Texas Aviation Partners and really liked everything I was hearing. In May 2014, I began working as a line technician. It's been almost 2.5 years and I couldn't think of a better group of people to work with.

What do you do for KLVJ now? I make sure that a smile is on every customer's face when they leave the airport - no matter their destination. We're a small team so I help with everything from cleaning, baking, reservations, fuel quality tests, and maintenance.

What is your favorite part of the job? I enjoy that every day is different. I can arrive at the airport in the morning not knowing exactly what types of obstacles we will tackle, but knowing that we will as a team. It is not a "conveyor-belt" job. Each customer needs something different and in the end, I can help them get where they need to be.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I mostly stay at home, reading books, cooking, or spending time with my two year old English Pointer pup.

Share something about your personal life... Years ago, I used to live on a sailboat.

Roadway vs. Taxiway vs. Runway - Navigating KLVJ from the ground

I can remember the first time I pulled into the main gate at KLVJ. I stopped my car and literally got out and started scratching my head. "Am I on a taxiway? Where is the FBO? Uh-oh... there's a spinning prop heading this way!?!" I immediately thought, "Well, this isn't what I'm used to!" I asked for some help and was kindly pointed in the right direction. It took some getting used to, but I eventually felt like I had things figured out. My head did spin a bit, when I saw two ATVs and a bicycle zip across the runway. In my military and GA experience, that was not something I had ever seen before. KLVJ is the first airport I've worked at that did not have a control tower expertly directing traffic and protecting the runway from incursions. I was also concerned with the "I have been crossing this runway for years" attitude I got from some of the people I spoke with.

I understand that KLVJ is home to many of you, and most of you have been here long before me, but I hope to help change the culture of KLVJ for the better, and Runway Incursions are a priority for me. The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) defines a runway incursion as "Any occurrence at an aerodrome involving the incorrect presence of an aircraft, vehicle, or person on the protected area of a surface designated for the landing and take-off of aircraft." I have spoken with many individuals over the last two years and asked them to please take a few extra moments to exit via the front gate, and re-enter from one of our 3 other access points on the other side of the runway. 90% of folks I have spoken with are happy to comply. The other 10% seem to look over their shoulder and see if anyone is looking, and then scoot across as fast as possible.

It is my intention to ask everyone to be vigilant and assist our staff with protecting the aircraft using the runway. If you see someone crossing, or attempting to cross the runway, say something. Together we can ensure that every aircraft has a safe place to take-off and land. If you are towing an aircraft, or have a direct need to cross the runway without any alternative, we require two simple things - Radio Contact with pilots in the pattern and a visible beacon light of some kind on your vehicle. You can find an inexpensive flashing rooftop light at any auto parts store and if you need to borrow a handheld radio, we have 2 at the FBO that we are happy to lend. We are also more than happy to escort anyone across the runway using our approved vehicles. My goal is to have 100% communication and safety anytime you are required to cross the runway. The runway is exclusively for aircraft to take off and land, and we can all do our small part to ensure it remains a safe and protected space. DRAINAGE DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Last week's rain has slowed the timeline of our drainage development, but is expected to be back on track the week of December 5th.

Weather permitting, the cutting of the the taxiway (see image below) is scheduled for Tuesday, December 6th and is scheduled to be completed that same day. Steel plates will be provided if a vehicle or aircraft needs to cross.

T-HANGAR DEVELOPMENT

We're putting the finishing touches on the new T-Hangars. They will feature electric doors, 120v outlets and plenty of space for supplies. Not only that but all of the drywall has been treated with a mold preventative paint and are sealed & protected.

NEW EQUIPMENT COMING SOON

We are always looking for the best ways to serve our pilots and passengers. We have identified a few items that will help us reach our goals. In the coming weeks, we will be adding new equipment to our fleet, to better serve YOU! As most of you now know, our Crew Car died a few weeks back and we have been working hard to find a replacement vehicle. I am happy to say that we will have a new crew car at KLVJ in the coming weeks! A solid crew car really makes a difference to many of our customers and we are very excited to get one in service. Thank you to everyone that has been patient while we searched for the perfect solution.

We are also adding a new Ground Power Unit. Our new GPU will allow us to power aircraft and avionics systems without starting their engines. We will be able to power air conditioning systems, and provide a key service that many of our Tenants need. A new GPU also makes it easier for us to serve transient pilots which are crucial to our success. We want to provide every possible service at the highest levels, and a new Ground Power Unit helps us reach that goal.

If there is something that you need that we do not offer let us know. We are constantly re-evaluating and refining our offerings to meet your needs.

GET TO KNOW ADAM ARCENEAUX

What were you doing before joining the KLVJ Team? Before working at KLVJ, I was with Redbird Flight Simulations. I began as the Line Service Manager at Redbird Skyport in San Marcos (KHYI) and continued on to the Simulator Sales and Demo Team, and later became the Flight School Admissions Advisor. Before Redbird, I worked at Georgetown Municipal Airport (KGTU) as a Line Tech, Operations Manager and General Manager of the Georgetown Jet Center. Before I started my GA career, I was a Crew Chief on the F-16 Fighter Jets for the US Air Force.

When did you start working for KLVJ? My first day at KLVJ was April 1st , 2015. In 19 months, we have accomplished so many things. The time sure does fly when you're having FUN!

What do you do for KLVJ now? As the Pearland Airport Manager, and FBO Manager, I wear many hats. As an NATA Certified Trainer, I am responsible for all initial and recurrent training for our staff. My Fuel Safety Supervisor training helps ensure clean fuel every day. Customer Service is the meat and potatoes of what we do, but I am not afraid to wear my landscaping or custodian hats as well. With a total staff of 3 outstanding guys, we are all tasked with many responsibilities. From repairing Runway lights, to hosting pilot seminars and Project Managing new developments, there is no job too big or small.

What is your favorite part of the job? No two days are ever the same. Our approach to excellent customer service never changes, but we find ourselves with many diverse opportunities to provide that level of care. We have seen the smallest of homebuilt aircraft parked next to a Phenom on our ramp. The ability to meet pilots from all over the world and help them along their journey is exciting and rewarding. I can't imagine doing anything else!

What do you like to do in your spare time? I am a bit of a weekend warrior, and I'm always up for an adventure! We will travel to many music festivals around the country and love to go camping, hiking, snowboarding, and swimming. I make the best burger you have ever had in your life! Cooking is one of my favorite things to do anytime, anywhere! I spend as much time as I can with family and good friends, laughing and goofing off. If it's fun, challenging, exciting and maybe a little crazy...I'm usually the first in line!

Share something about your personal life... I could not be happier or more in love than I am today! Erin is my heart and soul and our puppy Clara is the cutest thing you've ever seen. I have made so many friends here in Pearland and feel like KLVJ is my second home. Moving across the state and taking on a challenge of this magnitude was one of the best, and most rewarding decisions I have made. I am excited for what the future holds at Pearland Regional Airport!

HANGAR BREAK-INS

It has come to our attention reports of several aircraft and hangar break-ins at area airports. Thieves have broken into several aircraft and hangars and have been steeling tools and avionics out of unlocked aircraft. The string of burglaries have occurred multiple times over the past few weeks at Hooks, Conroe, Sugarland and West Houston airports.

It's possible that the thieves are flying in a night and looking for unlocked aircraft and hangars. Please take extra precautions and be vigilant about locking your aircraft and hangar doors. Report any suspicious activity by calling 911.
